Some things are so simple
type in the terminal

sudo service NetworkManager start
sudo chkconfig NetworkManager on
|
there it is back (if you happen to loose it)
To display the speed of your connection
simply install the ‘netspeed’ applet and use the add to the panel to add it to your desktop panel
|
sudo yum install netspeed
|
